Ayas Psychotherapeutic Interventions

About Us

Where Your Fear, There is Your Task

-C. G. Jung

Ayas Psychotherapeutic Interventions (API) was first conceived in 2015 by John Wiesh, LCPC, LMHC, CCMHC with services primarily conducted under supervision from a wide range of providers and environments. In 2022, API became its own separate entity focused solely on individual private practice. API was created to fill a void in general private practice and corporate/insurance driven therapy models. With emphasis on philosophical exploration and personal reflection, this style of psychotherapy appeals to folks seeking a deeper, more reflective approach to therapy.

What to Expect

In existential therapy, there isn't a strict timeline for when meaningful change will take place, however, it's common for the initial sessions to focus on understanding why you are seeking therapy, and the changes you wish to achieve. As therapy progresses, you’ll typically start to dive deeper into your struggles, often uncovering layers of emotional or existential concerns that might not have been as apparent at the start. These deeper explorations often involve facing significant questions about your values, purpose, identity, and the ways in which you interact with the world around you. Over time, these insights can lead to a greater sense of clarity, self-understanding, and a more empowered approach to making life choices.

Emotional distress is understood not only as pathology, but also as a meaningful response to existential challenges. Therapy’s role is to facilitate insight, self-awareness, and authenticity, enabling folks to engage with their lives more intentionally and responsibly.

While the primary focus of existential therapy revolves around meaning, isolation, freedom, and death, this can also be combined with other treatment modalities, such as CBT, EMDR, and prolonged exposure therapy. Appointments are available both in person and via telehealth, including access to non-traditional hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does psychotherapeutic intervention work?

Therapy is a collaborative journey where we explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. By integrating psychodynamic and evidence-based approaches, we help you uncover deep-seated patterns and develop tools for meaningful transformation.

What are the fees and insurance options?

The overall cost of therapy varies by individual and insurance coverage. If you have concerns about affording therapy, that could always be discussed before beginning. There may be options to meet your needs. API is in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, UHC, UMR, Iowa Medicaid (Iowa Total Care, Wellpoint/Amerigroup, Molina), and Aetna.

Do you offer online or in-person sessions?

We offer both in-person sessions at our Bettendorf office and secure online video sessions for clients throughout Iowa and Illinois. Both formats provide the same depth of therapeutic presence and efficacy.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Your care is protected by HIPAA. There are a few legal exceptions (for example, immediate safety concerns, suspected abuse or neglect, or court orders). Intake documentation will explore this in depth, and you are encouraged to ask questions before and during treatment.

How long are appointments, and how long can I expect to be in therapy?

Individual sessions generally last an hour. These times can be pared back to meet your individual needs. As far as the length and time one can expect in treatment, that depends on your overall goals. Generally speaking, one can expect to experience noticeable change in roughly 20 sessions.

How do I book or reschedule an appointment?

Booking can be done directly through our online portal. For rescheduling, we request at least 24 hours' notice to avoid cancellation fees. This allows us to offer the time to other clients in need.

What can I expect in our first session?

The initial consultation is a safe space for us to get to know each other. We will discuss what brings you to therapy, your history, and your goals. It's also an opportunity for you to see if our therapeutic style feels right for you.

Do you provide emotional support animal documentation, disability letters, or court services?

I do not provide documentation for emotional support animals, documentation of disabilities, or assessment of disabilities. It is important to note that while treatment by a licensed provider can be helpful in the court’s determination for disability, they often rely on their own providers assessments for determination. Court testimony is possible depending on individual needs, however the fee for these services is not typically covered by insurance.

Who should I contact if I am in immediate crisis?

If you need immediate help, call 911 or 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or go to the nearest emergency room.
